What is a forum?
Hull Parent Carer Forum is a community interest company (CIC) which is a type of not-for-profit social enterprise.
Forums are independent and not part of the council or health services.
HPCF aims to improve services in Hull for children with SEND and their families.
How does the forum help to improve services?
Our forum promotes parents' voices to influence change in the services their children and young people use. We do this through our engagement, information and feedback events by gathering the views of local families.
We work with the Local Authority, health, and other providers of services to highlight what is working well locally, as well as challenge when changes or improvements need to be done.
Who can join the forum?
The forum is open to parent carers, guardians and foster parents of children and young people in Hull who have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (aged 0-25). No diagnosis is needed.
If you live within the Hull boundary, access a Hull GP, or access services in education, health or social care in Hull, we would love you to join us.
Is the forum a campaign group?
No, the ethos of our forum is to work with the services to help them understand the lived experiences of our families and find solutions to challenges.
We influence change by working together, constructively challenging service providers and discussing possible solutions.
Additionally, the funding we receive cannot be used to campaign, and as a Community Interest Company, we are not allowed to take part in political campaigns.
What is a parent carer?
You may not recognise yourself as a parent carer, all parents care for their kids right? Well, yes, but a parent carer provides support to their children due to illness, additional needs or disability. This also includes grown-up children, and children who have mental health difficulties, and/or substance misuse problems.
Parent carers are less likely to be recognised as such by health and social care professionals, therefore it is important that you can identify as such so you can let relevant people know about your situation to enable you to access or be directed to sources of support.
What is an EHCP?
EHCP stands for an Educational Health and Care Plan. You can find out more about these by clicking the links below.
